From Holland to Bali: Sustainable Lily Cultivation

Who would have thought that lilies could thrive on the tropical island of Bali? Originally from the cool fields of the Netherlands, several varieties of lilies are now being cultivated in the highlands of central Bali. Known for its cool climate, Bedugul is famous for its rich farmland and beautiful flower fields. In this charming area, you'll find Lilium Farm, one of the first farms to commercially cultivate high-quality Dutch lilies, transforming the local flower-growing landscape.

High-quality lilies at Lilium Farm in Bedugul, Bali, are carefully sourced from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, bringing Dutch excellence to tropical soil.

Lilies are known for their fragrant scent and beautiful petals. The name "lilies" refers to the genus of flowers called Lilium, with the term Lilium derived from the Latin word "Leirion." Although lilies are believed to have originated in Europe, nearly every country now cultivates its own unique varieties, including those featured in this article, which are sourced from Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Lilies come in many varieties, typically growing to heights between 60 and 180 cm. Their leaves are long and slender, usually arranged in spirals or alternately along the stem. The stems are generally thin, ranging from 2.5 to 6 mm in width, and can vary in color from bright to dark green. The leaves of lilies have a smooth texture and pointed tips. One of their most striking features is their large, funnel-shaped petals, which can be single-colored or multicolored, adding to their visual appeal.

The Journey of Lilium Farm

Driven by his passion and dedication to the agricultural industry, Mr. Rudy Halim, the owner of Lilium Farm, was inspired to cultivate these beautiful flower seeds. It all began when a friend challenged him to import lily seeds from Rotterdam. Despite the complexities of obtaining agricultural import permits, Mr. Rudy's determination paid off, and he successfully imported this special variety of lily seeds starting from June 2024.

Mr. Rudy's farmland in Bedugul, with its cool climate and fertile soil, proved to be an ideal location for cultivating lilies. The climate and soil in Bedugul share similarities with those in Rotterdam, where lilies naturally thrive. Both areas have cool temperatures and high humidity, especially in the highlands, providing the moisture that lilies need. These favorable conditions allow lilies to flourish beautifully in Bali.

From Bulb to Bloom

The process of growing lilies starts with frozen bulbs, carefully defrosted and prepared for planting. Farmers ensure the soil stays moist, without overwatering, as lilies grow best in consistently damp conditions. The entire growth cycle from bulb to bloom takes about two months.

Since the first harvest, Lilium Farm has grown and gained attention from flower lovers. The farm has even expanded, exporting its beautiful flowers beyond Bali to big cities in Java. Currently, Lilium Farm cultivates ten different varieties include Freddo, Show Up, Bacardi, Pinnacle, Marlon, Lake Carey, Calabria, Eremo, Yellowin and Serrada. Each lily is characterised by its colour, fragrance and graceful petals that give a hint of elegance to any occasion.

More than just beautiful flowers, Lilium Farm’s lilies are grown with respect for nature. The farm is dedicated to sustainable practices, ensuring that all lilies are cultivated without synthetic fertilizers or herbicides. This commitment helps preserve the environment while producing lilies that are both stunning and eco-friendly.
